Hem folds an edge of a sheet metal part right back on itself. A hemmed edge is safe to hold (no sharp cut edge) and much stiffer. It works like Hem in Onshape and SOLIDWORKS.
How to use it#
- Click Hem (in the Sheet metal ▾ menu on the toolbar).
- Click each edge to hem (click a picked edge again to drop it).
- Choose the Hem type and set its size.
- Click ✓.
Options#
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Hem type | Closed: pressed flat onto the sheet. Open: folded back with a gap. Rolled: rolled round past halfway, with no flat part. |
| Length | Closed and open hems: from the outside of the fold to the end of the hem. |
| Gap | Open hems: the gap between the hem and the sheet. |
| Radius and Angle | Rolled hems: the inside radius of the roll and how far round it goes (181° to 270°). |
| Hem alignment | Inside: the outside of the fold is where the edge was, so the part keeps its size. Outside: the fold starts at the edge. |
| Inset | A hem shorter than its edge. |
| Fold the other way | The hem folds to the other side of the sheet. |
Tips#
- Hems on edges that meet at a corner are mitred, so they do not run into each other.
- In the workshop, fold a closed hem to about 45° in the bending brake, then close it flat with a mallet or in the folder.
